Celebrate National Dance Day by getting out and dancing! In Fort Myers, Fleamasters and Dance Every Rhythm Dance Club will co-host a community dance event, Saturday, July 26, from 11 am to 2 pm. The event will take place in our Music Hall.

On the half hours, Cultured Cabaret, a volunteer dance troupe, will teach this year's “Everybody Dance” routine. “It's fun, easy and almost everybody can dance it,” says Charlotte Capitano, of Dance Every Rhythm. “At the end of the dance event, we’d like everyone to join in as we create a video of the whole crowd dancing. The video will be sent to the Fox television show, ’So You Think You Can Dance.’”

Throughout the day, Cultured Cabaret will share dance favorites from every decade: from the 50’s Hand Jive to today’s popular Cha Cha Slide. The audience will enjoy demonstrations, get dance tips and join in the crowd dances. All activities are free, family-friendly and open to the public.

National Dance Day is an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July. Launched in 2010 by “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator Nigel Lythgoe, this grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and combat obesity. There’s no doubt dancing can be very good for you. Mayo Clinic researchers reported that social dancing helps to reduce stress, increase energy, improve strength and increase muscle tone and coordination.

7/26 SummerJazz On The Gulf - Late Night Brass

A Southwest Florida tradition continues, as The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club will again host its popular “SummerJazz on the Gulf” concert series. This will mark the 28th consecutive year of the fun, free concert series, combining a diverse selection of Jazz entertainment with beautiful views of the Gulf, gorgeous sunsets, refreshing breezes, and a relaxing atmosphere. Each concert is held on the resort’s picturesque Watkins Lawn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. “SummerJazz on the Gulf” will take place one Saturday evening per month June-September, and each concert will be from 7 - 10 p.m. This year’s concerts will be on Saturday, June 15; Saturday, July 20; Saturday, August 24; and Saturday, September 21, 2013.

According to Susan Savino, Director of Catering & Conference Services at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, the 2013 “SummerJazz on the Gulf” line-up is:
• Alan Darcy Group – Saturday, June 15, 2013
• Late Night Brass – Saturday, July 20, 2013
• Vodkanauts – Saturday, August 24, 2013
• The Betty Fox Band – Saturday, September 21, 2013.

“This year we are very pleased to bring back two of our most popular SummerJazz bands, Alan Darcy and Late Night Brass, which are true crowd-pleasers,” said Savino. “Alan Darcy very successfully kicked off our SummerJazz concert series in 2009, and Late Night Brass returns to SummerJazz for the fifth consecutive year. This year we are also proud to feature two acts that are new to SummerJazz, Vodkanauts and The Betty Fox Band. The audience will just love them. It promises to be a wonderful concert series.”

Each concert will be held from 7-10 p.m. on the Watkins Lawn. Hotel guests will receive complimentary parking at the resort. For those not staying at the resort there will be parking just north of the hotel at Lowdermilk Park, with free parking provided to those with a Naples beach sticker, and free trolley service to the resort and back. Guests may bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, however no outside food and beverage is allowed on resort grounds. Call (239) 261-2222 for additional information and directions.

Alan Darcy Group will kick-off this year’s “SummerJazz on the Gulf” concert series on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Known for always putting on an electrifying show, Alan Darcy and his band combine an appealing blend of jazz, pop, standards, and R&B that truly showcases Darcy’s impressive saxophone and flute skills and smooth vocals. His saxophone skills are often compared to David Sanborn, and the show includes an eclectic combination of original jazz tunes from his four CDs, as well as covers of such crowd favorites as Sting, Billy Joel, and Frank Sinatra. This will mark his second appearance at “SummerJazz on the Gulf.” For information on Alan Darcy and his band, visit www.alandarcy.com.

The very popular and versatile 10-piece band Late Night Brass will headline the SummerJazz concert on Saturday, July 20, 2013. Returning to SummerJazz for the fifth consecutive year, this high-energy band features a powerful four-piece horn section (saxophone, two trumpets, and trombone), a driving four-piece rhythm section (keyboard, guitar, bass and drums), a dynamic male vocalist, and a very talented female vocalist. They will perform a range of songs from such popular horn bands as Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, and Blood Sweat & Tears. The band also plays songs from such groups as Huey Lewis & The News, The Blues Brothers, Commodores, and Doobie Brothers. The band has opened up for Chicago, Chris Botti, Huey Lewis & The News, Billy Joel & Elton John, Michael Bublé, Earth Wind & Fire, and Sting & The Police. Vodkanauts will perform on Saturday, August 24, 2013. The talented five-piece band consists of Jonathan Harris on vocals; John De Bellis on electric and acoustic bass guitars; Mark Warren on electric and acoustic guitars, as well as vocals; Ryan Arsenault on keyboards and vocals; and Stan Arthur on drums and vocals. The band nicely blends jazz and rock-and-roll with time-tested tunes with inventive arrangements, delivered with true showmanship and crowd-pleasing energy. This season’s final SummerJazz concert on Saturday, September 21, 2013, will feature The Betty Fox Band, which is known for its blues and funk-infused soul. Lead by fiery songstress Betty Fox, the band also features musical heavyweights Josh Nelms on guitar, Matt Walker on bass, and Sam Farmer on drums. The band was voted “Best of the Bay” as Tampa/St. Petersburg’s “Best Local Blues Act” in a reader’s poll by Creative Loafing.
