Pit bull attacks Fort Myers Police durning robbery arrest

A Fort Myers Police officer was attacked by a Pit Bull during an arrest of a 15-year-old for a robbery at gun-point in Fort Myers.

Fort Myers Police say around 11:32 pm, Officers were approached at a substation at 3696 Nelson Tillis Boulevard regarding a just occurred Robbery with a Firearm.

The two victims were distraught and explained to Officers that they had picked up two men in the area. They stated once stopped at an address, one of the males pointed a black firearm directly at them, waving it back and forth while demanding money. Once the male brandishing the gun had the cash, they both fled on foot.

Records show Desmond Garlin, 15, was charged with:

  • F.S.S 812.13(2a) Robbery with firearm
  • F.S.S 784.021(1a)-Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

On December 29, at approximately 6 pm, Officers with the Juvenile Delinquency Intervention unit attempted to take Garlin into custody for the Felony charges.

Garlin resisted at the doorway of the home and was taken to the ground, outside of the house, to be placed into hand restraints. During this, a large pit bull charged Officers, biting one on the forearm.

The Officer disengaged from attempting to secure Garlin due to being bitten by the dog. The Officer tried to gain space from the dog, but the dog continued aggressively pursuing the Officer, who fired shots at the dog to stop the attack.

Emergency Medical Services provided aide to the Officer and the dog, who were transported to a local animal hospital.

Garlin was taken into custody for Felony Robbery with a Firearm, Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, and Resisting without Violence.
